What Is Enteral Nutrition?

Enteral nutrition is the delivery of nutrition through a feeding tube that goes directly to the stomach and small intestine, it is sometimes referred to as tube feeding. This is an alternative feeding method that provides the necessary nutrients to support patients who cannot eat through their mouth and are not able to normally digest food.

Who Receives Enteral Nutrition?

Patients of any age can receive enteral nutrition. Several different conditions can affect patients' appetite or their ability to chew and swallow foods, which can result in needing enteral nutrition to ensure proper nutrient intake. A few of those conditions can include:

  • Cancer
  • Neurological Disorders (such as stroke or paralysis)
  • Gastrointestinal Issues
  • Trauma

What Equipment Is Necessary for Enteral Nutrition?

There are specific supplies and equipment necessary for enteral nutrition to ensure the patient is receiving safe and effective care. Here are a few of the necessary supplies for enteral nutrition:

  • Enteral Formula
  • Feeding Pump
  • Feeding Tube
  • Feeding Bag
  • Syringe Kits
  • A Tube Feed

How Is Enteral Nutrition Administered?

There are two different types of feeding tubes that doctors use for enteral nutrition. The type of feeding tube used is based on the patient’s condition and how long they will need enteral nutrition. Here are the two types of feeding tube options:

  • Nasal Tube – This tube is placed through the nose and down the throat into the small intestine or stomach. This tube is typically used for patients who will need short-term care, usually less than six weeks.
  • Gastrointestinal Tube – This tube is surgically placed through a small incision through the skin and connects to the stomach or small intestine. This tube option is typically used for patients who require long-term care, usually longer than six weeks.

What Common Issues Are Associated with Enteral Nutrition?

Common issues and risks associated with enteral nutrition include:

  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Dehydration
  • Cramps
  • Infection and Pain at the Tube Insertion Site
  • Clogged Tube

If you or a loved one experiences any issues or complications with their feeding tube, it is crucial to speak with your physician as soon as possible. Many common gastrointestinal issues can be avoided by following a regular feeding schedule and paying close attention to the pace of feeding.

Should Patients Skip Meals with Enteral Nutrition?

No, to ensure that the patient is receiving proper amounts of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals, they should avoid skipping feedings. If the patient is feeling sick or bloated, causing them to skip meals, they should contact their doctor to see if any changes need to be made to the formula or feeding schedule.
